The general music program is based on the belief that music is an essential part of the education of every child. A year-by-year, sequential approach offers students the opportunity to master a wide range of music competencies through instruction by two music specialists. Students explore music through an activity-based program of singing, listening, creating, playing classroom instruments, and participating in dance, rhythmic, and dramatic activities. Classroom instruments that students play include the recorder, electronic keyboard, ukulele, guitar, and Orff instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels, and met allophones).
The Casis music curriculum has an emphasis on singing, but our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders play the recorder and other pitched and non-pitched instruments. Additionally, our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders put on a choral performance each year. Our 5th graders participate in Choral Fest each year. 4th and 5th graders attend the Austin Symphony and participate in the performance. 3rd-5th graders have Austin Jazz Workshop work with them in class and perform for the students. 3rd graders attend a showing of ‘The Nutcracker Ballet’. All grades sing a variety of songs, play instruments, dance and play musical games. Students in Kinder -3rd grades have musicians come to perform from the Austin Symphony Orchestra. We do many other things throughout the year as well as the things listed above.
